Marae Weekend 2017
Our annual Marae weekend was held at Te Tahawai Marae. The Inbound and Outbound students were treated to a Maori cultural experience commencing with a Powhiri and then various cultural activities which included flax weaving, Waiata's, and a Haka. Outbound parents and inbound counsellors joined the students on the Sunday for a welcome on to the marae and the chance for the students to perform some of their new found Maori cultural items. The weekend then concluded with a briefing on travel and insurance matters for outbound students.
2017 Inbound Student Orientation
Welcome to our 2017 Inbound students. Our recently arrived inbound students gathered for the first time to meet each other at an orientation meeting to outline the districts exchange programme. It was a good opportunity to get to know each other and to meet some of our recently returned exchange students as well as our students that will leave on exchange next January.
2017 Student Farewell
District 9920 said farewell to this year’s exchange students with an evening where the students each spoke of the value and learnings from their year on exchange in New Zealand. Touching accounts were given with many wise words from each student telling us that it is not what you do that is important; it is who you do it with, and telling of the personal growth and development that they had each realised thanks to the exchange experience and the support of their host families and Rotary clubs.
In thanks for the value of the programme and to make their own contribution to Rotary, most of the students worked during their year, to raise money to support the Emergency Response Kit (ERK) programme. ROTEX organised a quiz night to further support this programme and this event raised over $5,000
2017 Selection Weekend
Selection Weekend was held at Willow Park. The applicants for 2018 exchanges were joined by the Inbound Students and returned exchange students (ROTEX). It was another excellent opportunity for young people from New Zealand and overseas to meet and discover the many things that they have in common. The exchange applicants were briefed on the Youth Exchange Program and provided with information and tips essential for a successful exchange.
D9920 Rotary Conference 2017 - Auckland Yacht Squadron
D9920 Conference was held at the Auckland Yacht Squadron. Our students participated in the Conference opening by parading the flags of their countries into the conference room.
The theme of DG Roger’s conference was “The Power of One”. Each student spoke about a particular audience that a single exchange student influences for good during the whole period of a student exchange. Many conference delegates later approached the students complimenting them on their speaking and them as international citizens. All agreed that a Rotary Exchange is one off the most precious opportunities that can be afforded a young person and that participants build a global perspective where stereotypes do not exist and everyone is seen as being very much the same. The RYE Chair also detailed what ROTEX is and how it had supported the RYE students in running a Quiz Night that raised $5400 to support Emergency Response Kits (ERK). In addition, individual students had raised another $3,000 plus of which Henning deserves special credit for his $1,100 contribution.
2017 Challenge Camp
Our Inbound Students were part of the team that assisted with this year’s Challenge Camp. This is a 5 day residential program for physically challenged youth. The week offers many social and educational activities with activities such as climbing and archery combined with motivational speakers and social events. The week was one of the highlights of the exchange year for the participating students.
2017 Quiz Evening Fundraiser
ROTEX and our RYE students combined to hold a Heroes vs. Villains themed quiz night to raise money towards the Rotary Emergency Response Kit Program. Every year inbound students are asked to raise funds to sponsor a response kit each and this year ROTEX (Returned Students) wanted to be part of that too and took the lead in organising this event. About 100 people were part of a great evening with lots of fun and 10 rounds of tricky questions to determine the evenings winning team. The evening was a huge success and raised a significant contribution for ERK
2017 Boating Day
A combined D9910 and D9920 boating day was held providing the opportunity to cruise the Auckland inner and outer harbour and enjoy activities on the water and some of the harbours beautiful islands.
Auckland Day 2016
Auckland day introduces our inbound and outbound students to many of the civic functions of Auckland city - Morning tea with the Mayor (without the Mayor able to attend this year) , a visit to the central fire station and police headquarters, followed by the Great Auckland Day Challenge. These interesting visits familiarise our students with their city and also engender an awareness of the support services that operate.
South Island Trip 2016
D9920 inbound students joined with students from Rotary District 9910 and 9940 for the annual South Island Trip which is part of the Inbound Student program
A contingent of students enjoyed the adventure which over 21 days took them around the South Island from Abel Tasman Park, to Queenstown, Milford Sound, Mount Cook and Christchurch. There were many exciting activities included Kayaking, Trail Biking, Bungy Jumping, and LOTS of fun.
2016 Rebound Students
Our 2016 Outbound students arrived back from their exchange in January and caught up with each other for the exchange Debrief meeting. There was much conversation and many stories to be told. The common theme was that it was a great year away with so many new experiences and many friends made from all around the world.
2017 Outbound Students
District 9920 Students joined those from the rest of New Zealand as they all depart for their 12 month exchange. One group are destined for South America and have a 3 day stopover in Buneos Aires, Argentina. The second group are destined for North America and Europe and enjoy a 3 day stopover in Los Angeles. Then for all it is on to their host country to meet their first host family and commence their exciting Rotary exchange.
